The international trio Okuda Müller Hall – Rieko Okuda (Japan), Matthias Müller (Germany) and Samuel Hall (Australia) – plays freely improvised music which, thanks to their strong shared sense of form, often sounds as though it were composed.
On their album ³√ (“Cube Root”), they combine wide-ranging developments with a finely balanced interplay. Subtle references to Berlin’s Echtzeitmusik and free jazz are ever-present without being intrusive – rather, they flow organically into a distinct sonic language.
The result is a multi-layered, vibrant sound that combines clarity and openness. In the trio’s focused, intuitive interplay, an acoustic space of great depth and fluidity unfolds, within which a steady pull develops, drawing the listener ever deeper into this flowing, ever-changing soundscape.
